Licensing
If local law required roofers to be licensed, then make sure they provide you their license number. They should either offer it to you in the beginning or willingly give it to you if you ask. You can also use this number to check their record with the licensing department to see if they have any complaints against them.
Get References
Ask for references and follow through and contact them to talk to them. A sign of a really good company is they give you a list of people to call in the beginning so you do not have to ask them. It shows that they have nothing to hide.
Are They Bonded
Bonding is a type of insurance that insures the worker while working for you. If something happens, their insurance will cover it. If something of yours disappears, or otherwise gets stolen, this type of insurance will cover that too.
Guarantee
Do they guarantee their work? Any good contractor will ensure that their work will stand the test of time for a year at least.
Experience
Ask about the experience of each of the workers that will actually be working on your home. They should all have the needed experience to know what they need to do.
Technique
Find out about how they will go about their work. Different people will do things differently. You may have your own preferences. Ask them to explain why they do the things they do. Double-check their work to make sure they are not doing anything that could hurt your home. Different homes are built differently too and will require their own special techniques. A good contractor will know the special homes in his or her area and will have a special technique for the ones that need it.
